Late Visitor

    (Icterus galbula)

This species is not a common visitor to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia,
but more and more are reported every year.

I had a surprise when I looked out the window
Monday morning.

A juvenile male.
Isn't he sweet?

It's pretty late in the season to be hosting orioles.
When I contacted Blake Maybank,
one of Nova Scotia's leading birders,
he sadly informed me that this little fellow is
LOST!
And, will probably try to survive the winter here.

So, out went the oranges, the grapes, the jelly...
and if he continues to visit,
as he has the last three mornings in a row,
we'll have to get some mealworms!

  3. Interesting how birds get their instinctive migration wires crossed in their brains and just go the wrong direction sometimes.

  6. Oh, he is so cute! If he is lost will he survive the winter? Will he nest in a birdhouse? Too bad another little bird can't come by and help him get back on track to wherever he should be heading. I'm so glad you noticed him and hopefully with your help he'll make it. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  14. Here's hoping he survives. Who will feed him when you go to tx? Too bad he can't hitch a ride. It's still quite warm here.

  16. That's a cute bird. Speaking of that bird, soon enough, I'm about to tell of how I've earned the Bird Study merit badge, in case you forgot that I earned all 132 merit badges.
