Connections

Being a nature lover and a quilter,
it is sometimes difficult to connect the two in a post.
No doubt about it, quilters and artists have taken  the very best
of nature and incorporated it into their art for centuries.

I've posted about owls, bees, dragonflies, and more dragonflies.

This morning, I found another connection, albeit ever so slight.

Several of my quilting followers have asked me
what a life list is
when I'm talking about seeing new birds.

Birders are great listers.
They have a life list, a yard list, day lists,
trip lists, wish lists, state, county, and even country lists.
I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.

Now there is e-Bird,
and they can keep track of their lists on the internet
with thousands upon thousands of other birders.
This opens up a whole new playing field!

Visiting a new area?  Just hop onto the internet for a list
of birds that you can expect to see while you are there.

I looked 'lister' up on Dictionary.com
and discovered that a list is also:

1. a border or bordering strip, usually of cloth.

2. a selvage.
3. selvages collectively.
4. a strip of cloth or other material.
5. a strip or band of any kind.

Therefore, although the term is now obsolete,
a 'lister' is also 'one who applies a border or edge to...'.
Quilters are great listers of lists, as well.
It's the only way they are able to finish all the projects they've started,
and manage their life around their sewing!
Have a great weekend.
Hope you check off everything
on your list!

  5. Being a word person, I really enjoyed learning the archaic meaning of lister. This is great information, especially knowing I can look up birds to watch for in new areas. I'm looking forward to it!

  12. OH I never thought of keeping my list online, but I can see why it would be a great idea!! I still have mine in a book all handwritten.
I love quilts, I admire the artistry of it all and since Ive been into sewing all my life I appreciate the task as well.

  14. What a fun post Karen! And nice to learn something I didn't know. I've been aware of the various "birder" pursuits, as we have many avid birders here in WI. We are on one of the migration flyways as well as home to many Eagles. Didn't know about the sewing definition, what fun! I'm off to make a list *VBS* Hugs,Finn

  15. Hubby and I are amateur bird watchers and have a mini list of the birds we've seen in our immediate surroundings.
Interesting connection to the sewing world! I've never heard the term list or lister in that context. :-)

  17. I'm "leaning" toward "listing", and I've always been kinda edgy, haha! I really enjoyed this post, Karen. You know what a word freak I am. Nature lover too.

  18. Hey, KaHolly, My son, Dog Walker will talk about his Nature merit badge soon. He just worked on his Citizenship in the Nation merit badge on his blog. If you would like to, you can just go onto his site and read all about it. It's good.

  19. That's a good list of connections. I never heard of ebird, but I heard of Red Robin. I did put up a new post on my blog. If you want, you can come see it. It's a recipe you might want to try.
