In life, I have always been 'a free spirit'.
The Urban Dictionary defines a free spirit as
one who is not restrained.
Free Spirit Fabrics epitomizes that definition.

But did you know that Free Spirit also has
a quality line of solids?
As my sewing experience has grown,
due largely in part to quilting's incredible online presence,
I have become a little bit of a fabric snob.
The very first time I handled Free Spirit solids,
I never looked back.
You might remember this Bright Birch Trees quilt I made from all Free Spirit solids, except the scraps, of course. |
I never looked back.
They sew like a dream, they hardly ravel, I've had no bleeding issues,
And I just LOVE how they feel.
With the exception of the Maritimes Modern Quilt Guild's
Kona signature colors,
Kona signature colors,
I've been purging my solids stash,
and am in the process of replacing them with...
...you guessed it!

ReplyDeleteI would have to say that I am a free spirit because I dress and do what ever I want. As long as it does not go against God's teaching, I am my own unique person. Just ask anyone who knows me! LOL

ReplyDeleteHi Karen love to be part of the free spirit giveaway.I always thought I was a bit of a rebel grin.I love the wording free spirit better.I have not had the joy of having these fabrics in my stash and would love to win and be converted. You may think I am crazy but fabric has away of talking to you, hope i have the right words.
ReplyDeleteI am slowly becoming converted to solids as I make my first project using some so would love to try out the Free Spirit ones.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course I follow you by email. xx
ReplyDeleteKaren I don't follow too much the quilting rules, I like to make projects my way
ReplyDeleteI'm already a follower
ReplyDeleteI follow on bloglovin AND my blogger dash board.
ReplyDeleteOver the years I have collected many fabrics for "crafting". But when I found Kona Cotton years ago is when my snobbery started. I had to smile when I overheard someone comment at Walmart about how much cheaper the fabric was there....wonder why.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of Free Spirit and will be happy to go check out their site.
I WANT to be a free spirit. My soul cries to be free. I definitely don't fit a mold. I am my own person for sure. But I can't let my self control slip for a second. That is why I don't drink alcohol. I've been thinking lately I should have a drink and let loose!!
xx, Carol
Love ❤️💜💕 the quilt you once made! And what a lovely chance to try free spirit's solids.
ReplyDeleteSince about two years my spirit has become free-er, due to certain events, which I won't be mentioning here. It feels so much hetter, though!
Well, and as you know, I have been a follower of your quilts and nature/bird experiences for a very long time!
ReplyDeleteHi, Karen - what a fabulous give-away - thanks! I doubt anyone would describe me as a free spirit, but I absolutely followed my muse almost 30 years ago when she whispered for me to leave my teaching job and pursue a quilting career instead, a life of creative pursuit.
ReplyDeleteI have never used Free Spirit Solids but they gorgeous in the quilt you made ... would love to try them ... thanks for the chance to win this great giveaway Karen....
ReplyDeleteLove followering your post to see the great projects you do Karen....
ReplyDeletePastels, Oh my favorite. I follow you via email and love your blog.

I just purchased my first Free Spirit solids, in the Spring. They are beautiful. What makes me a free spirit is my ability to try new things and my willingness to laugh at my many mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a follower of your blog. Thanks for the chance to win more Free Spirit fabric.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that I have tried Free Spirit fabrics before. Am going to have to look into them.
ReplyDeleteI follow vial email

ReplyDeleteYou know I have not tried the free spirit solids yet. I do remember that lovely quilt you made using them.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower via email.
It took me a long time to become more of a free spirit. I am learning to let go and do things I want and not what everyone else expects of me. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous fabrics! Thanks for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteNaturally, I am a loyal follower thru Bloglovin.
ReplyDeleteI think i would consider myself a free spirit , I am not a follower. I don't think i have tried these fabrics so would love the chance to win .
ReplyDeleteOf course I am a follower😊
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried these before - in fact I have only dabbled a little in solids...thanks for the chance to win some, Karen :-)
ReplyDeleteWhoops I'm think my last comment went through before I was ready - hope it made sense?!! I'm a follower too :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure anyone would call me a free spirit, but spirited maybe.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of this line before reading your blog.
I follow by e-mail. Thanks for the chance to win such nice fabric.
ReplyDeleteI remember you calling me a fabric snob a while back! You know I love FS solids. My fave right now is Manatee. Second fave is Pomegranate.
ReplyDeleteI adore your Bright Birches quilt. It's awesome.
I happily follow you and your quilty adventures
ReplyDeleteBack in the days of CB radios that was my "handle" Free Spirit"...I have a K. F. Quilt Collection Book, its one of my treasures! I have been doing such a small amount of sewing I don't need to win fabrics so if I should be chosen take the next in line, I did not want to read and not leave a comment tho...on one of my favorite blogs!
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful giveaway. I haven't tried these fabrics, maybe because I always see it connected to Kaffe Fasset, and I am not a fan of his designs. However, these solids look gorgeous! dezertsuz at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteAnd of course I'm a follower! Thanks to you and to Free Spirit for the chance to win some beautiful pastel solids. dezertsuz at gmail
ReplyDeleteI like Free Spirit fabrics and would welcome some pastels for my stash. I have used several of their groups of fabrics. I do like your blog and follow it. Virginia sewsewsenior@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful giveaway. I haven't tried these because i haven't seen them to date....but would love to. =) What makes me a free spirit is that I almost never use anyone else's designs and can't manage to follow a pattern to save my life - not even my own. ;-)
ReplyDeleteAnd I follow by email. Thanks to both you and Free Spirit fabrics for the goodies.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway! Thanks for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a follower.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower from way back when and love my friend, free spirit and all.
ReplyDeleteI've never met you face to face and I really want to change that this winter when you come down here.....but yes, I can believe that you are a free spirit so the fabric fits the girl ! Your Bright Birch tree has always been one of my favs !
ReplyDeleteGosh, you don't have enough space... for me to describe why I am a free spirit, rule-breaker, questioner of authority etc.
ReplyDeleteI firmly believe that I am just leading the way for (some) others to follow. My life story is a best seller. I just need to write it :-D
Hugs,
Preeti.
What an awesome giveaway Karen! I can tell from reading your blog that you are indeed a free spirit and that is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAlso... I follow you on Bloglovin!
ReplyDeleteI'm not tried Free Spirit. I'll have to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteoooh, pretty!
ReplyDeleteConformity is for the birds!
Beautiful fabric! What makes me a free spirit: I never ever have worn a watch, I do things spur of the moment, and I have to have all the windows and doors in my house open!
ReplyDeleteAnd I follow your blog!
ReplyDeleteHello Karen. Wow! Free Spirit fabrics are being very generous. I would love to sew with any of these fabrics while I make Dresses for Girls Around the World. As for me being a Free Spirit? I'm not sure I am but I do know my mother was definitely a Free Spirit and it allowed her to fully enjoy life and world travels. Thank you dear.
ReplyDeleteI happily follow your blog via email.
ReplyDeleteI am following you via Bloglovin!!
ReplyDeleteI love Free Spirit fabrics, they have a great feel and color to them.
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower via e-mail :)
ReplyDeleteoh wow...what a lovely giveaway. I like to think of myself as a Free Spirit in my attitude to permanency and material things - they really aren't vital as I know I can survive without both - having done so before (however not fabric material OBVIOUSLY - haha)
ReplyDeleteHugz
... and I'm a follower of your blog....
ReplyDeleteHugz
I'm not the most free spirited person in general, but I do love free spirit fabrics...especially lines by Anna Maria Horner!
ReplyDeleteHi Karen I forgot to mention I have been a follower of your blog for quite sometime.Alos, have you on my reading list and blog roll
ReplyDeleteHiya Karen, I like the feel of Free Spirit solids too though I haven't used them much. I am not much of a free spirit myself in life but I am a bit that way with quilting, I like to change a pattern and make it more my own rather than follow directions, hehehe.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes me a free spirit? Well I almost never follow a pattern completely. I not sure if it is because I am a free spirit or I just can't follow directions.
ReplyDeleteBy the way I have been following your blog for a while.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried this line of solids. Good to know that they work well.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog on Bloglovin.
ReplyDeleteI am more free in my spirit than I used to be as I am old now and feel free to be me
ReplyDeleteColleen
I just joined to follow your blog via email, welcome to your blog for me
ReplyDeleteColleen
Well poop looks like I missed the deadline by a few hours, but no worries; I am so glad I came by! I will definitely give these a try as you and I have talked about the Kona issues that no one seems to address and believe me after Dayna's grad quilt with all the Kona Snow and all the intricate quilting, I was more than a tad mad at Kona... Now to find out where I can get them...
ReplyDeleteOops forgot to say that I am not exactly a free spirit, although I wish I was... when I do let the whimsy take me, I am always pleased with the result, so need to lean more that way. And I follow you on bloglovin' but I'm thinking I need to add email as I missed a couple posts I see...and hey! I just found you on Instagram so am now following you there too my friend. :-)
ReplyDeleteI like your birch tree quilt a lot! It looks like something I might create some day
ReplyDeleteKATRIN W.
I know that it's too late to participate in this, but I just wanted to say that it's great hearing from someone who embraces being a free spirit!! Sometimes in life, we're influenced to be followers, but I think it's important to hold on to what makes us unique. Great post!
ReplyDeleteThis was a great post, Karen! I've never used Free Spirit solids (where does one buy them?) and am definitely NOT a free spirit myself. So this was all quite refreshing. So happy for you to be sewing with solids. It's what I find myself doing more and more. Yet I well-remember the days - in the late 80s - when I thought sewing with solids was boring. WHO would want to do that?! (grin) I have definitely changed my quilting preferences, going FROM a horse of different stripes TO a horse of a different color! Ha, ha.
