Winners and a Finish

I would like to thank everyone
for contributing to the comments on my last post,
"Things My Mother Used to Say".
I got quite a chuckle from some of the responses!

I'd like to add one more from my mom,
something I can hear her telling me several times a day,
"Never leave a room empty handed."
Not being the best housekeeper in the world,
this little piece of advice keeps me on my toes,
and my house fairly tidy!

The Random Number Generator chose
comment number 37, Lisa Boyer
and comment number 7, Sandi @ Shhh Designs
to each receive 2-20 count Free Spirit Fabrics charm packs.

Congratulations, ladies!
As soon as I receive your addresses, I'll pop them into the mail.

I do have a finish to show you today,
one I am very proud of!

My first real attempt at custom quilting on my Janome Horizon.
I originally blogged about it HERE.

I am going to call this quilt "A Kennebec Wnter".
It is 60" x 60"and took me approximately 30 hours of quilting.

It was a great learning adventure.
I practiced going frontward, sideways, and backwards
and obviously, it's not perfect,
but I gained so much confidence!

Here's a close up.

And a look at it from the back.

I love my Janome and will miss it while I'm away.
I start my annual migration south next Saturday, with my first stop being Boston,
to spend a little time with family and friends,
before making my way to Texas.

Stay safe and warm
as Mother Nature begins to remind us that
yes, it is winter.

  6. it's turned out lovely Karen. It may have taken a while to quilt but the results are so worth it. I zoomed right in for a good look, beautiful quilting, you have made such a great job of this. I like the name too, it looks like a winter quilt. Safe journey to your winter home, you remind me of the swallows, that would make a great nickname for you.

  13. I really loved your giveaway post! My mom encouraged full hands too:) We used to tell her to kick-back & relax, but she paid no mind, & ahe is atill busy as ever. Perhaps the best advice really is example, did you have the wallhanging, like we did, Children Learn By....

Hmm, I will have to research that one, lol, but maybe you know what I am referring to.

My mother taught independence, and she being single, we were taught to ride Metro. An important piece of advice that I heard a thousand times, & have used all my life, is to never appear lost. Hold yourself with confidence!

  15. I'm so happy you shared this beautiful quilt! You did a super job on it, Karen! Scary to keep track of the hours spent quilting, isn't it? I've timed mine only a few times because I really don't want to know. I'm just happy you enjoyed your time at it, and I have no doubt you will have many more happy hours of quilting ahead of you... once you get back to that great machine. You quilt so very well!

  19. Beautiful quilting, Karen! I love how you emphasized the arrow-like shapes. It makes the "plain" white pieces as dynamic and vital as the pieced focus blocks. Great job!!

  30. I chuckled myself at the latest words of wisdom to appear here on your blog - as that is a mantra I'm trying to drum into myself to assist with my - not so pristine- housekeeping efforts :-) I love your latest quilt, the quilting on it is lovely, sets it off nicely without taking over. Safe travels as you head south, it seems to come around so quickly, I feel like you've only just arrived back home!

  31. Around here we call that, "Touch it once." If it needs moved, take it all the way to putting it away. Not half way or close to where it goes.

I'm really taken with your quilting, and enjoy the fact that you kept track of your hours. It's so often overlooked. The time element is staggering when you consider it, and rarely appreciated for the long hours spent.

Have fun as a snowbird in Texas, and enjoy the light.
