Last July, when I reached 50 followers, I was so very excited.
Never in my wildest imagination did I expect to reach 100.
I'd like to show my appreciation by having a give-away to celebrate 100 followers and the coming of spring.
Give-aways are fun because everyone likes to win.
It's only human nature!

I am pleased to have a brandy new copy of Bill Thompson, III's
Bill is editor of Bird Watcher's Digest
and author of the blog

Bill of the Birds on Blogspot.
He has very generously made arrangements with his publisher to donate a book just for this give-away. Written with the cooperation of his daughter and her classmates, The Young Birder's Guide is truly an inspirational tool for sparking the excitement in children and engaging them in the world of nature. It's easy to use, easy to understand, and very well illustrated. I think I'd like a copy for myself. Afterall, I'm just a grown-up child!
I also have a copy of the newly published
Crossley ID Guide: Eastern Birds,
compliments of the
Princeton University Press,
to give away.
I have been reading some excellent reviews about this new birding resource guide. Nina of Nature Remains, for one, very eloquently convinced me of the need to check it out further! Two other reviews by Monarch's Nature Blog and The Drinking Bird left me drooling. Sounds to me that this reference book is sure to revolutionize the way in which we identify birds, and lordy knows,
I need all the help I can get!

I have made a Field Guide Tote Bag
to throw into the mix,
very similar to the one pictured here.
Adapted from a pattern by Atkinson Designs,
this bag is the perfect size to hold a field guide
and rests comfortably out of your way,
but is easy to grab.
The handle doubles as a tape measure
for quick reference or for scale.

To participate, simply leave a comment on this post. I'd love to hear how you have introduced nature to someone new, but it's not necessary. And if you think to, let me know what your choice would be from the prize list should your name be chosen by the random number generator.
(This give-away will close one week from today.)Her prize is this adorable,
Owl Moon, by Jane Yole, a Caldecott Award-winning story
of what happens when a little girl goes out one moon-lit night on an
owling adventure with her father. The illustrations are beautiful, the text full of lovely descriptions, and I know Donna will enjoy sharing this story with her grandson.
Congratulations, Donna, and thanks!
with some food-for-thought:
'How will today’s kids
(who will be the leaders of tomorrow, afterall)
feel any need to protect the environment
if they’ve grown up without experiencing nature?”

I'd love to win the birders i.d. guide but since I'm not "easterly" I'll defer my chance to another follower. Congrats on 100! :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Karen and how kind of you to have a giveaway. I have a friend who had a birthday recently. A lot of times I try to find something that would be dear to their heart, but this time I gave her a dvd on First Flight, A Mother Hummingbird's Story. I thought what better gift than to give something that was very dear to my own heart, my love of birds. She enjoyed it so much and we had a lovely chat about those little hummingbirds, so much so that she is going to buy a hummingbird feeder this spring.
ReplyDeleteKaren: How very nice of you. Since I have animal feeders in my yard I have been able to introduce my grandkids to the natures the feeders draw into the yard. My grandson spotted his first whitetailed buck a few weeks ago in the yard.
ReplyDeleteYou're so generous, and congrats on the big numbers of followers!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Karen! You are very generous to sponsor a giveaway. I'll be checking out the Crossley ID Guide. Thanks for the tip. :)
ReplyDeleteYay for 100 followers! I'm at a lowly 8...lol. Thanks for stopping by the other day!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE a birder book, but seeing as I'm westerly, I'd have to go with the Nature Principle book. Looks really good! So nice of you to do a giveaway!
Cheers!
Dallas
Karen, You are just the best follower of my blog with all your wonderful comments. I love you! I'm going to conduct some of these give aways on my blog in the future, too. It's a terrific way to pass on stuff that is loved but no longer needed. I'm especially interested in reading The Nature Principle. I'm headed out the door for New Jersey to see my daughter and do some birding. Hard to believe that will seem like a trip south for us!
ReplyDeleteHi Karen,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 100 followers, your photos are great.
I also enjoy taking pictures in nature, but they tend to be more flora than fauna, although the occasional fauna is photgraphed.
I just want to leave you a fun message, don't need a gift except of your friendship!
Congratulations on hitting the century mark. From the reviews I've read, Crossley's book would be a great addition to any (eastern) birders library.
ReplyDeleteKaren, how wonderful to have 100 followers. It is always a joy to read your blog and as I've told you before I always learn something new. Your give away is wonderful. As I've mentioned before I have put some feed for the birds on my patio and my grandchildren have so enjoyed watching the little birds that come to visit. We also make regular trips to the ponds below us to check on new arrivals. The Young Birder's Guide would be wonderful but I'm a westerner. I really don't need to win anything to enjoy your friendship and blog. Nola
ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 100+ followers!
ReplyDeleteGreat catching up with you again. Love your Worldless Wednesdays and what a lovely Ladybug Grandmother Bag!
If I were to win, I'd go for the Hooterville pattern. Such happiness.
And thank you for the food-for-thought!
Congrats Karen..great idea..I won't participate as I would like the prize to go to someone who maybe would be a new nature lover...Michelle
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on 100!! Fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteMy nephew is 8 years old and loves science and nature. Whenever we go to the bookstore, he chooses some kind of book relating to animals. If I am lucky and my number is up in the random generator, I would like the young field guides book so I can give it to Jonathan on his 9th birthday next month. I know he would truly enjoy it.
xx,shell
Wow! What a fun give-away! Congrats on 100! Love the owl pillow!
ReplyDeleteHi, I've come to your blog from my husband's blog. Your give-away looks wonderful. Please sign us up!
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Lois
I love teaching my granddaughters all the different birds I have visiting my feeders. They are 4 & 6 years old and can identify many birds, male & female! They love to look at bird books and I would love a new bird book as every book has different details. Your blog page is great!
ReplyDeleteWhat a generous giveaway! I'd love to win the Nature Principle if I were to be one of the lucky ones!
ReplyDeleteI teach birdwatching classes which although people sign up already interested in nature, very often I'm introducing them to new things!
Congrats on 100 followers. Congrats to Donna too.
ReplyDeleteAnd what a great giveaway you are having.
When I homeschooled my children they all had nature journals. They drew and researched info about their subject. They did some fantastic drawings too.
If I was to win I think this crafty friend would like the Hooterville pattern. I have several bird field guides already. So they should go to someone who doesn't.
Thanks for the giveaway.
I'm not shy! Gimme the Nature Principle book! I'd love to share the ideas with my weekly column readers. It just so happens I wrote a column about taking a break from my newspaper article writing to take a birding walk around the yard AND I'm researching the local urban areas for birding for those that aren't lucky enough to have a 135 acre backyard.
ReplyDeleteEven so, if I don't win, I'm buying that book. How inspiring you BOTH are!
Well, I can say I make it a point to take my daughter into the woods...but you already saw that in my post last month, which you commented on! I will have to check out this Richard Louv, his writings sound interesting.
ReplyDeleteHello Karen! I am so blessed to be your 100th follower and to be the lucky reepient of your little owl! Oh yeah..the Owl and The Moon book...I just told my dauhter that will be the next book I buy for Billy! He loves owls and reading and stuffed stuff! I guess I will have to re-gift it all to him! You are too kind and I am lucky that you are my also my friend!
ReplyDeleteYou are so generous! I love to be in nature! I love to share it with others and try to engage my grandchildren family and friends. As you know, my blog is one way I do this. If I were to win I would like "The Nature Principle" if you can bear to give it up!
