It has been brought to my attention,
by a very sweet and caring nurse,
that the babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
located at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio,
need blankets.
Home-made blankets.
Blankets made with love.
Ordinarily, I would prepare a few during the course of
building my other projects, probably setting them
up as a Leader/Ender project,
and donating a few at a time.
However, these fragile infants
are the babes of our brave military men and women,
so I'm asking for a little help.
Small quilts, measuring 24" x 24" or larger,
are perfect for keeping the babies warmer in the isolate,
and provide them with a securitiy blanket as they get older.
The nurse I mentioned will embroider the baby's name on the blankets
if the parents would like that.

if you care to send along a quilt or two.
I am assuming the responsibility of collecting
and distributing them while I am here in TX.

ReplyDeleteThere are church groups that make quilts for newborns. You might want to consider contacting a few. There are some great quilters in them. Second are the care homes. There are a lots in there that love to quilt still and would love a project like this.

What a beautiful thing you are coordinating, Karen! If I was not already making baby quilts for our own Mercy Children's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, I would certainly join you. I hope you receive LOTS of quilts. We're having our Quilt-a-Thon this weekend and hope to have lots of participation. We are definitely "better together." Bless you!

ReplyDeleteWould they accept just simple flannel receiving blankets that are home-made? I made several of these for my son and they wash up so soft. Plus, they are great to swaddle the little ones when they are a little bigger. I generally make them 45" square - which is bigger than most store-bought receiving blankets.
ReplyDeleteKaren, I live near San Antonio, where I was born and raised. I have a soft place in my heart for both military families and for preemies, since my son and daughter in law were in the Navy and my grandson was a preemie. This is the busiest time of year for me, but I would love to try to work in a quilt for this cause.
