Today's Flowers

Northern Honeysuckle (Lonicera villosa)
Also called Mountain Fly-honeysuckle.

I think it's been renamed as Lonicera caerulea,
which reflects the fact that it produces a blue fruit.

A circumboreal species that likes boggy, peaty, cool regions,
it is found scattered throughout Nova Scotia, from Labrador
to Alberta, south to Massachusetts, Michigan and Minnesota.

The bees think it's pretty special!

Go to Today's Flowers to see more beautiful specimens.

I wonder if the bees ever get tired of all the work they have to do?

You'd think, huh? Sometimes they are so laden with pollen, it's hard to imagine that they can fly at all!

I take it that is a native honeysuckle -- does it smell like Japanese honeysuckle?

I was tangled in Japanese Honeysuckle yesterday, so it's nice to see a picture of native honeysuckle. I'm not likely to see this species around here. It hasn't been seen in Ohio for 80 years and is presumed extirpated. It's nice to see a picture of a live specimen.

Hi Swamp4me, no, it doesn't have that sweet scent. But yes, it's native, just small bushes dotting the landscape.

Steve, I hear you! It doesn't smell as sweet, but it's twice as pretty!

I don't believe I've ever seen this honeysuckle! The bee looks so big compared to the blossoms!
