Riparian Rarities

Be very still.
Is that what I think it is??
Yes, indeedy!

Children at Play!
One of most favorite things!

"There is a real world, beyond the glass, for children who look, for those whose parents encourage them to truly see." Richard Louv, "Last Child in the Woods"

And that reminds me
to remind you of a couple of great books
I've mentioned in the past
that would make great Christmas gifts.

Last Child in the Woods, by Richard Louv, would make a great gift for any parent, grandparent, or teacher on your list.  This book really gets to the core of some present day issues surrounding the activities our youth participate in, or the lack there of, and why.  It is written very clearly, in everyday language, and there's no beating around the bush.  If there is anyone on your list you would like to encourage to expose their children to more meaningful outdoor activity, this is the book for them.

Sense of Wonder by Rachel Carson would definitely be on my list for gift giving this year to all the families in my life with small children or grandchildren.  I consider this among the 'must haves'.

The Young Birder's Guide to Birds of Eastern North America by Bill Thompson would make a great first birding book for any child this
Christmas, in the hopes of sparking some enthusiasm for becoming a new birder.  Bill engaged, not only his daughter, but his daughter's class, in putting this book together for the younger set, and it is terrific.
After all, it's
Kid Approved!!

Isn't it fun to see children at play away from the electronic gadgets that seem to take precedence in their lives. These kids look like they are having a great time. I'm always so happy when I see my children encouraging their children in their play time and not allowing them to watch much TV and then it is only PBS. Thanks for sharing the book ideas. Nola

Great post. It is so important for children to have time out doors. Looks like a great list of books.

What great books.

Thank you for your comment and I also have just discovered the Drumstick Tree and the Maqui Berry.

I find them exciting plants for their potential to provide quality food to so many.

The Drumstick Tree is also being looked at as an inexpensive way to purify water in countries with this need.

Last Child in the Woods is a fabulous book... as wildlife biologists, my husband and I have gotten to see a lot of places and in one of those places, Texas, I worked at a Botanical Gardens and Nature Center where we has Richard Louve (writter of Last Child in the Woods)come and talk.. He is a great guy and even grew up 10 minutes from my hometown in Missouri.

Getting kids outdoors is such a key topic and CRUCIAL to sense of place, wonder and even just plain old exersize. Who doesn't want to go dig a hole in the backyard with spoons? ;)

Thanks for sharing those books, we are in LOVE with the owl cake below as we have been missing our Spotted Owl friends in Oregon since our last field job ended there a couple months ago.

Happy Holidays!
