With more rain in the forecast,
it doesn't look as though I'll be getting out very soon.
(How much 'guilt free' sewing can a girl do?)
So, I thought I'd revisit some earlier sunny days
during my recent visit to Florida.
I was quite enamored with this little killdeer
who sat religiously on her nest,
rain or shine.
But one day, as I walked past her, she was stretching her legs.
When I looked 'killdeer' up in the bird book,
it said they generally have 4 blotchy, spotted, brownish eggs.
So, I zoomed in and looked all around the rocks
where she made her nest,
and lo and behold,
I know, I know, they are difficult to see.
I'll try zooming in on them a little.
Still hard to see, but that's the point, isn't it?
Mother Nature designed the eggs to be camouflaged.
But she didn't give the poor little killdeer much common sense.
They aren't very discriminating where they build their nests.
This one is in an empty trailer lot
inbetween the 2nd and 3rd trailer on the left.
Silly birds!

We have killdeer nest in our yard and driveway most every year. This year they were in the mulch by one of the trees in the backyard. At least that was better than in the middle of the driveway! LOL
the eggs do look like rocks, if someone was walking out there and mama left we could walk right over them!
hope your rain stops soon, will be raining here off and on for a couple days, things are growing!
it is true. they are terrible nesters. got to see a mom and 3 striped babies yesterday near the edge of a parking lot here yesterday. :)
I see those birds at a pond where I walk and yes, they do lay their eggs in the oddest places. You wonder how any of them ever hatch.
Crazy birds, they should chose a safer spot but the eggs are so camouflaged they really are hard to see . Very pretty birds !
We think they are a little silly for there nesting spots, but I bet you would be hard pressed to find it if she see wasn't there !!

Golf courses are another place they pick!! It could be golf balls or eggs another way to disguise
then!! ; )

Typical of the 'plover' family to use a bit of stony ground to provide camouflage for the eggs.
I hope the weather improves for you.

The killdeer probably feels quite safe living among the oldsters. No kids around to bother the nest and probably no pets either. What are those blue rocks doing there in the gravel, I wonder?
