Just Sayin'

During the summer of 2012,
after I made and entered the Dresden Plate quilt
that's in my header picture
into a quilt challenge,
I thought to take the block a step further

and add two more borders.

Then I thought to stitch an embroidery design in the center
in place of the Dresden Plate,

as pictured here on Nola's Just Rambling blog in Dec. 2013.
I've made a couple each year to gift family and friends
as pillows and wallhangings.

Imagine my surprise when I was scrolling through
a well known designer's site the other day
and found it on her blog as a new pattern she launched
just this past October
on her site and in her Etsy store.

I'm sure the embroidery design she uses in her center is her own.
I don't have an artistic bone in my body, and,
except for the word ring,
I either borrowed someone else's embroidery design,
or used a Dresden Plate.

I realize it's a simple little pattern and anyone could have dreamt it,
that there really isn't anything exclusive about it.  I was just surprised.

Either great minds think alike,
or, as they say,
imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I'm not a skilled and talented designer,
but once in awhile I apparently come up with a good idea.
Just sayin'.

Have a wonderful, funderful day!

It's a lovely quilt! Your design is wonderful. So nice, in fact, that I can understand someone copying it.

Hard to know which way around isn't it! With pictures flying all over the internet you never know where designs are going to turn up. Great design though and I like yours best! xx

I love your idea! Especially the embroidery around the dresden :-) So many of the "new" designs that pop up lately are simply remakes of something that's been around forever, just using updated fabrics or tweeking it to make it more "modern". Isn't it nice to know that someone else also thinks your design is beautiful! I'd definitely take the "imitation is flattery" road.

I recently was playing with different variations of quilting feathers and thought I'd come up with something unique and fun. A few weeks later I saw a photo from an upcoming book of a well known long armer and LO! She had the exact same variation of the feather! I had never seen hers and she had certainly not seen mine--a case of parallel development I think. But I still felt disappointed, and certainly the more well known person will get more credit for it than I will. Oh well. Sorry you went through something similar!

I like yours the best! It's pretty tricky when these things happen. I just read Nola's post and she sure loved that you designed it for her.

You are very skilled and it is a great idea to frame a center block of all kinds.

I love your idea, both with and without the embroidery. What a wonderful snowman he is! How lucky your family members are to have received such a thing, too. Yes, great minds run around in circles. ;)

What a great idea to add the embroidery to make special gifts for people and the two rounds of borders sets it off quite nicely! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and it's interesting how people come up with similar ideas.

I love them both!!! As a designer, it happens to me ALL THE TIME - I come up with what I think is a brilliant idea, and before I have a chance to draw it out, I find out someone's already done it. Usually days before I draw it out. So it's not that I saw theirs and came up with the idea - it just happens that they had the idea too. A couple of times I've drawn a pattern, uploaded it, then seen a very similar version on someone's site - new enough so that I know I didn't copy subconsciously, but close enough so that I worry someone will think I did copy! It happens.

I really like both your mini's, especially with the embroidered messages. Super-sweet! I have done a very similar tri-border, except with a 5" solid border added to make it baby size. I cant seem to find a picture of it to share. I appliqued a sailboat in the center with the baby's name.

That's so crazy! Your encircled embroidery is really very pretty in the double border.

What a coincidence! Or not! I can understand how you feel about seeing something you created being "copied" by someone else. Whether you both came up with the same idea at the same time, or not. I saw "my" Prism quilt (made from a Zen Chic) pattern, somewhere else, and thought it was mine, until I saw that someone mimicked my version, using the same rainbow colors. Weird. No "rights" were involved with that one though. You make lovely things, Karen, and I hope all your gift recipients know how fortunate they are!

I firmly believe that if you've made someone happy then you're quilt has changed the world, and that's all that matters, making someone happy, and I'm sure your quilt made someone happy. Have a happy Christmas.

Both of your versions of this little quilt are gorgeous, Karen. I love the bright colours and the beautiful dresden in your first rendition. The embroidery was certainly a lovely touch. And the snowman version is festive and sweet, too. What a thoughtful gift!

Your top two quilts are gorgeous Karen. Isn't that interesting about the same design on Etsy?
