I find that I now call all quilts that I make-
'learning quilts',
and this next one is no exception.
Last fall, I thought it would be fun
to learn to make wonky log cabin blocks.
As soon as I had a few lined up on the table,
they told me they wanted to be spiral quilted.
After searching Pinterest,
and checking out a few tutorials,
I contacted Linda, author of Flourishing Palms.
and requested a Spiral Quilting Tutorial.
She didn't disappoint,
as shortly thereafter, she published a very in depth
and well written tutorial.
Thanks, Linda!
But, it was getting late in the season for me,
and I was only able to complete a couple of blocks
before it was time to pack things up
and migrate south for the winter.
Last week, I pulled out this UFO and completed it.
I didn't forget how to make the wonky log cabin blocks,
but I did have to brush up on the spiral quilting.
"The big X in the centers?", you ask?
Remember I said this was a learning quilt?
Welllll, I was so excited to start the spiraling process
when Linda published her tutorial,
I forgot to put a backing on my block, so
I quilted them all the same after that little faux pas,
and needed some way to anchor the backing.
To quote a quilty friend of mine,
"It's for a baby. He/she won't know the difference."
(You know who you are.)
After I put it all together,
I'd wished I'd made it much larger,
but unless I wanted it to be a UFO for another year,
I had to go with 36"x 36",
calling it my one and only gender neutral baby quilt.
Now, I'm ready for anything,
boy babies, girl babies, and 'I don't know' babies!
The fabrics were passed on to me from
friends in the Maritime Modern Quilt Guild.
I don't often have yardage to work from,
so I thank you very much!
From soggy Cape Breton,
I wish you a sewl-ful week!
XO,
karen

It is great.....the colors are really speaking to me. I also find that every quilts are a learning quilts....I can't say that I ever did a piece where I didn't learned anything.
I love those colors with the strong yellow against the calm grays! Spiral quilting looks great, especially with the straight lines of the log cabin.
Stay dry!

learning quilts are good!! it turned out cute.
Congrats on the finish, live and learn right!
Congrats on your finish! I just love concentric circle in a log cabin block. You did a great job!
Love how that turned out! Love the colours! I have not attempted to do any spiral quilting. I should. I could learn a lot.
Karen, your quilt is awesome! The baby will love this one so much!
Wow Karen it looks terrific,i love the colours, well done my friend xx
how lovely Karen - that spiral quilting is so effective for that block... and the X marks the spot and gives it a special bit of zing!! Yes, I think I work on the practice quilts - for my sewing techniques as well as trying out new quilting shapes...

They say you are an expert at something when you can fix up any mistake...did you quote that before? It looks AWESOME. Anything babies everywhere would be cozy under that!
The spiral quilting is very effective, and I love the colors.
I do like your quilt - perfect for any baby anywhere! The spirals are so effective and I thought the cross was meant to be there!!
Really love it!
How wonderful to have finished a long time unfinished quilt and I just love your spiral quilting. Thank you for the link to the tutorial! Christine x
I love your quilt Karen my DH says to me when I make a blunder only you know what you have done.Regards Lyn
It's lovely, Karen. Funny thing...when I first started reading and saw the X through the spirals, my thought was I would try that next time as it's a good effect. You've started something!
The quilt looks very nice, and I really like the quiltig. The X doesn´t bother me, that is the way you intended it to be and it goes good with the circles.

A lovely finish Karen and well done with the quilting. Great to have a UFO out of the way I am sure. xx
It looks fantastic! What type of machine are you using? I have a really hard time making smooth curved lines. Are you using a walking foot or free motion? Doesn't it feel good to have another finish??
The log cabin is such a traditional block, but your colors have given it a modern look. Hey, a small finish is better than a big UFO.
Hugs,
Preeti.
I like the big X through the spirals! It looks like a design feature, not an oops :) Yellow and gray are great together. My niece requested those colors for her son's first baby quilt. Yours came out really nice!
I really like your quilt and the spiral quilting. It adds a fun element to the quilt as well as the center X. It certainly doesn't look like a mistake, just part of the design. I think it is so awesome that you are learning and doing all these fun quilting designs. Nola
I think they're all learning quilts and that's what I enjoy the most about making them. I love this one, especially the colours. It would be wonderful for a baby but I also thinkg it would make a lovely....curled on the couch....reading a book....having a cup of tea....quilt.
I agree with the others - the X looks great - sort of a spider web effect. Looks good to me!
Cute quilt overall and nice to have one finished up, isn't it??
It's beautiful Karen, your spirals are so perfect and I kind of like that x through the center it gives it an extra dimension . Some little one will be super cuddly under this sweet quilt 😊
Well, this is fantabulous! I love everything about this little baby of a quilt. Great use of no longer loved by someone else fabrics, great perfectly wonky block, great spiral quilting and awesome recovery on the little faux pas. What a learning experience!
Now how did you know that spiral quilting is something that is in my mind ? Now I know where to look for a tutorial
That looks great. The spiral quilting is perfect for those blocks.
Well done, Karen! Like you, I regard every one of my quilts as a learning experience. You've learnt Linda's lesson on spiral quilting well, and I say go to the top of the class! Xx
You are wise to think of your quilts as "Learning Quilts". It takes that awful stress factor out of finishing your quilts. I like the spiral quilting and the X Factor. Sweet Baby Quilt...
Great spiral quilting. I've only done it once, but would like to try it again.
It looks perfect to me ! Love the colors you chose !
This gorgeous ♥
Spiral and wonky appear to be a marriage made in heaven. Love the combination. I think the baby will like it too although he may not know why...yet.
Soggy there? We are in a horrible drought situation here! I love the spiral quilting on your wonky LC, all of my quilts have spoken to me and taught me a lesson or two as well! The baby will love it~
Evidently, that tutorial was exactly what you needed to take off running! Your spiral quilting looks great!
Ah, guild friends are the best! I think you accidentally explored Quilt As You Go, and I agree that it will be just fine for baby. Not once have I heard an infant criticize the consistency of a quilting design. It's a fantastic gender-neutral quilt. I love your philosophy too: All quilts are "learning quilts". I know mine are!
This is a wonderful baby quilt!
The colors are beautiful and I love the spiral quilting.
I love how you tackle anything. It's a beautiful quilt and perfect for baby cuddles. Really great spirals.
The colors and quilting look beautiful...any baby will love it!
How nice of you to give me this shout-out, Karen! I was tickled to receive two new comments on that spiral quilting tutorial, from people who read your blog. I think this quilt turned out great, and will be the perfect size for a "whatever" baby. :-) Once again, your generosity shines through your work.
