Adding a Little Color

Spring in the Atlantic Canadian Maritimes
is often synonymous with
relentless rain and lingering cold temperatures.
Even if the sun comes out, the winds are bitter cold.

And June isn't getting off to a very good start.
It can't last much longer!
Can it?

So, what do you do when it's windy, cold,
and usually wet, day after day after day?

You work with the brightest,
most colorful fabrics in your stash, of course!

Luckily, I had a fat quarter bundle
of rich, brilliant Free Spirit Solids
just screaming to be used,
and a Preppy the Whale pattern calling my name!

I have been working with two colors at a time,
and making four whales at a sitting.
This is only half of what I've accomplished so far.

I am chain piecing this project,
and making a scrappy leader/ender quilt at the same time.
I like to play the 'don't break the chain' game
and see how long I can sew without starting over.

I'm also participating in Lori Kennedy's FMQ-a-long
over at The Inbox Jaunt.
I was fortunate to have a little box full of bonus HSTs
leftover from another project to prep.
I need all the practice I can get!

This has been knee replacement week for The Ranger,
and I'm a little behind on my sewing,
so I guess I'd better
get back to work!

Happy June!

Oh my goodness. Those fabrics are perfect for a Preppy the Whale project. Leader ender projects make for efficient sewing.

Nothing better than bright beautiful colors to help warm your days up. Your whales are looking great. Hope for a speedy recovery for the Ranger. I hear physical therapy is key.

Wish our spring would stay cooler...it has been muggy and hot but we have been having thunder storms almost daily...and that helps bring in some cooler air. When I had my upholstery shop we used to sew our cord strips in long chains...maybe 30 yds long in the end! It could become quite a tangle if it fell on the floor! Enjoy your project, looks great so far.

I love your bright and colourful whales Karen, they look such fun. You are so organised with your leader and Enders projects, I keep meaning to start one bot I still haven't sorted my mountain of irregular shaped scraps yet. Glad to hear Ranger Ron is recovering, it will be well worth it in the end.

Your bright and colorful whales are great! I hope The Ranger is getting along well, speedy healing! Wishing you warm breezes and sunshine for a change of pace, at least so that walking outside can be added to the rehab regimen. Hugs~

Preppy is so cute! And I love those bright colors in rainbow order :) I'm glad you have some nice, varied projects to work on when you have time. I'm sure you're doing more other stuff than normal, to help with The Ranger's recovery. I hope that's going well and he's back to Irish dancing and pogo stick practice as soon as possible! (Those ARE his knee exercises, right? :)

Such Happy Whales! A fun and colorful project. Hope the Ranger is "dancing in the streets" soon. He's sure had a time of it lately. Hope there is a wind of change very soon for the weather and the Ranger.

You are definitely making the best of the weather. I LOVE those little colorful whales.

Looking forward to seeing what becomes of the HSTs.

Good luck to the Ranger with the knee replacement.

Your whales are lovely - those colours work really well. Haha, yes, the more pieceing I can do without cutting the thread the more satisfaction! Little things. Best wishes to The Ranger, hope he is back out ranging again soon. xx

Love seeing the brightness you've been working on! Those whales are precious. And your Don't Break the Chain game is one that I occasionally play too. It's fun to see the leader/enders accumulate, though I do think they slow down progress on the main focus project. Sorry that you've been having icky weather and needing to play nursemaid too. Didn't Ranger have surgery last year too?! Please, please send rain south. We are in drought conditions in Central Florida. As of June 1, there's once-a-week rationing of water for yard irrigation.

These whales are delightful--perfect for sewing when the weather's cold and dark! What a trick to see how long you can chain piece. I have to confess that I can get terribly confused when I chain piece. That design wall is intriguing. What is it made of? I hope the knee surgery went well and that recovery is smooth and quick!

Healing Energy for the Ranger. I love how you are sewing bright fun whales in your cold and damp Spring. I am a huge fan of August because it is sincerely a nice warm month of Sunshine Bliss. <3

LOVE your whales Karen! Yeah, that big ol' ocean sure plays a major role in Spring weather methinks...kind of like my Lake Erie, but yours is to rather a vast-er degree. Love the bright colours and how do you like the Free Spirit solids? I love chain piecing and getting a second project 'for free'. :-)

What cheerful cetaceans!
When we went to Grand Manan we learned about whales but the day we went whale-watching turned out to be their day off.
