Scrap Happy

I completed another scrap quilt
that I had started in TX.
It didn't really use enough scraps to call it
a scrap buster, measuring in
at 54" x 68".

I'll prepare the label today
and package it off
to surprise a very dear family friend.

This quilt caught my eye on Pinterest one day.
It is was the Snowflake Quilt-Along

It looked like fun
and I thought it might play well with
assorted scraps.  I'm not disappointed.
I used it to warm up the Janome, after my long absence,
choosing fun, familiar stitching,
 only in the background,
which you can't really tell is different tone-on-tones.
I use Aurifil thread when I FMQ.
~
The Ranger built me a Chickadee house
from a hollowed out log.
We arrived home from grocery shopping Saturday
just in time to see a baby venture out
and fly away.

The hottest day of the year, so far,
I imagine the choice was
fly or bake.

We contented ourselves by setting up on the back deck
in the shade of the house
and waited for the rest of the babies
to fledge.

It was too hot to do much of anything else,
and it was great entertainment,
lasting most of the day.

Temperatures are pretty close to perfect now.
Hope you're having nice weather, too!

XO,
Karen

love your quilt! not a stash buster but it used up some and that always counts! I hear it has been hot every where it seems but we finally are out of it and nice days this week - windows open last night and this morning- almost unheard of for late July in Arkansas

OK, now I am super jealous! That quilt is awesome! I love how fresh and bright it is. And your quilting is wonderful. This is going in my favourite folder. I am about to commit myself to a self imposed month of dealing with my scraps and only my scraps and was looking for a cool easy pattern. This fits the bill. Hope you don't mind if I copy you. A day on the deck in the shade watching birdies sounds like a lovely day. You must be feeling good with our near-Texas heat lately. I know I am not! My NS body just cannot handle the heat + humidity of late. I am wilting!

What a great quilt and I love the way you have quilted it. Someone is going to be very happy! Great birdhouse. xx

Wonderful quilt, Karen. I think it can be hard sometimes to make scraps look modern, but you did that very well with this one. I love it and am sure your friend will, too. Watching nature seems the perfect way to spend a summer day—even when it’s a little too summery.

What a lovely quilt, Karen! Love that design, and I heartily approve of using scraps this way. Perhaps not literally scrap-busting, but no doubt scrap-reducing. I especially like your approach to unburdening yourself of quilts... just mail a quilt to an unsuspecting friend. How can they refuse? I love this concept! Perhaps it's the one I'll adopt for unburdening myself of an excess number of quilts. What can the recipient do about it!? Ha, ha, ha. Happy for you to have enjoyed a quiet afternoon of appreciating nature. We've had so much rain - that storm stalled in the Gulf of Mexico - that being outdoors means having an umbrella at all times. I think I'll sew today. :-)

I love that scrappy quilt. I’m going to have to look that one up for my scraps.

Watching the birds fly off sounds like a great way to spend the day. You’ll miss all the activity in the little house.

What a lovely scrap quilt. It may not be a scrap buster exactly but it’s a wonderful quilt to use up scraps, and how kind of you to sent it to your dear friend. I’m glad the weather has hotted up for you, it’s unseasonably hot here in the UK, even in my cold corner. Enjoy it while it lasts :-)

Your friend will be thrilled to receive this quilt. Great use of scraps even if only a few. It’s been hot, hot 🥵 here as well but it rained last night so was able to sleep. Love the bird house.

Such a precious scrappy quilt-- sure to be loved and treasured. The Chickadee house is adorable, we've had lots of Bluebirds nesting here this year; it's just the most fun to watch the babies fledge!

I love that quilt and how you grouped the colors! Someone is going to be doing a happy dance when they get that as a gift. Isn't it cool to watch the birds, especially the babies?

That is one of my favorites that you have shown...it has movement! Love the log house so it finally warmed up eh? We are enjoying some of your Canadian Air right now low humidity and cooler temps thanks for sending it our way.

This will be a lovely gift.
Good luck keeping cool.

That's a great leader-ender project! Especially if there are binding leftovers around. =) I have a windowsill and a shoebox and a bag full of squares, so I could probably make a Super King and have leftovers for that part. LOL

This quilt is so bright and cheery...love it! I rarely keep scraps, but this is definitely an inspiring way to use them. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the Chickadees!

I echo all the comments -- what a great block design! I like the setting you used, too. Hope the recipient is appreciative.

I love your finished quilt Karen - a great scrap user even if it wasn't a scrap buster! Nice that the Chickadee house is placed where you can sit and watch it :-) Our temperatures haven't been too bad for winter but I understand a wintry blast is about to hit the country for the rest of the week.

Not a scrap-buster but is definitely full of scrappy goodness. You know 80 degrees seems absolutely gorgeous after a week of 90+ days. No complaints about the weather :-)

Love your scrappiness! I've just made a couple of scrappy quilts for a charity baby shower. So much fun to make something useful with all I have. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Lovely quilt you have created Karen Dear. What a fun bird house and how fortunate to see the babies leave the nest. Summer is here and our weather has been fairly divine. We will reach 105F this week. Gazing at a beautiful sunset tonight. Life is Good and I am Blessed.

That's a fabulous use of scraps. It's scrappy but light at the same time. Enjoy your Cape Breton summer...we're not making it back to NS this summer :(

Karen, I have to tell you how much your quilt inspired me. Right quilt, right moment. In looking for a new pattern to open our charity sewing day with, this gobsmacked me at first glance! I chased the links you posted, thank you, and was delighted to see it originally made in the reds and aquas. But by far, I like your multi-colored rendition best! We will be playing with values as well as using up scraps, and will be thinking of you. Thank you so very much for being my inspiration this morning, and solving one of my week's big questions.

Happy sewing, my friend!
