On July 23rd, I noticed this curious little critter
outside my back sliding glass door,
feasting on a wild caraway plant.
You can see it's not very big.
I kept a watchful eye on it
and in time, it changed from that,
to this:
Yesterday morning, it was gone.
(Poor thing was probably sick and tired of me
sticking a camera lens in it's face!)
It will reappear one day as this!
Eastern Black Swallowtail |
A few weeks years ago,
(seems like only yesterday)
Loft Creations launched a new pattern,
Hailee Bag.
I remember how smitten I was with it,
and how, as soon as she announced it was for sale,
I was at her Etsy store, purchasing the pattern.
Ah, hem.
Well,
life gets in the way sometimes,
and I just finished making my first one.
You notice, I said 'first'!! It was such a fun and easy pattern,
I can't wait to make more.

(Now, THAT's a flying goose!) |
I only have brightly colored jumbo ric rac,
but then I found a couple of quarter yard lengths
of this coordinating fabric in my stash.
(Don't remember where it came from,
probably something my daughter picked out for something special,
and I forgot.)
I don't think it came out too badly.
As a matter of fact, I think love it!
*8-18-10: My daughter, on the other hand,
said it's ugly. I guess the fabric didn't come from her afterall!!

We had one of those that cocooned on our side door - where everybody goes in and out, you'd think it would pick a quieter place, lol! We missed the big reveal though. LOVE that handbag, the colors are perfect and the rick rack is too cute!!!
Hehe!! Yep, love that flying goose so much, with something like 216 of them waiting for me to make. That caterpillar is gorgeous - I never knew they could change so dramatically during that stage.
glad your caterpillar pal found good eating. :) like the phoebe in your header, too.
Wow, must have been a recently-hatched caterpillar, just out of the egg, in the first photo.
As for the bag, it's gorgeous. I was never good at making things like that, and since my cataract surgeries, I can't see well enough.
But I can't complain. One of my best friends, who sewed, quilted, gardened, and took amazing photographs, lost most of her sight last year due to thinning of the arteries leading to her eyes. I saw her last month at our high school reunion, and she's doing remarkably well.

Very Cute! Ive seen a few of these guys around here too...They didnt polish off my parsley this yr tho.
Love what you made and the caterpillar photos were great! Nature is amazing!
Hi Karen..Wow a real beauty isn't it !
I would have loved to find one !!
Lucky you to see any get great shot's before he left!! : }

I found one of those caterpillars in my garden a while back and I was going to keep an eye on it too but I think a bird might have gotten it.
Your bag is beautiful and perfect for Autumn.
What an interesting change in that little guy.
I love the bag, and the ric-rac on it is the perfect touch!
Your photos of the caterpillar are really great, as is the butterfly photo. You appear to be very talented in many areas.
How fun to watch this little catepillar change into something so beautiful. Wish you could have seen him fly off, but I'm hoping you will see him around. Love the colors you used in your bag and the orange rick rack sets it off perfectly. You have certainly been busy.
That Caterpillar is really pretty! I like its markings.
They are beautiful creatures, but boy oh boy they multiply fast and love dill too. I went to pick some dill to make pickles one day and there wasn't any. There was the day before !
What beautiful colors in that little critter...love your bag
I don't know that I've ever seen a worm like that.
I have seen a lot of swallowtails this year.
We had several of those "cats" feasting on our parsley a few years ago. This year, they didn't touch the stuff I planted. I guess they didn't like the taste of a new variety.
You are so talented with the needle as well as the camera, Karen. And I love the functional crafts you make. I get frequent compliments on the business card holder you sent me along with those lovely nature cards. I feel blessed to have made your acquaintance.
What a beautie! Love the up close pics of it! Darling bag too!
How did I miss this post? Feedly is a pain -- I miss blog posts and then can't add new ones to read. Sheesh. Anyway...I absolutely LOVE Hailee. She's beautiful and the rick rack is the perfect color. It brings me great joy to see this bag. Your photography is always amazing!
Only you could jump from "this to that," so smoothly! Lovely pictures of the critter - before and after - and also of your purse. Love your fabric and rick-rack combination. Are you now regularly using this bag? How do you like the button closure?
That caterpillar is AMAZING! You did a nice job with the bag.
