Summer is in full force
and finding time to sew can be difficult!
But I did manage a few finishes.
As I've already mentioned,
I participated in the Repeat - the QAL
I participated in the Repeat - the QAL
with Patty over at Elm Street Quilts.
I sat each evening after the supper dishes were cleared away
and foundation pieced my letters,
a few at a time.
I called it my dessert!
I quilted it with an all over design
of Angela Walters.
I found the design fun to stitch,
but had trouble making it look random
yet all fit together.

I purchased the whole alphabet here
and have already started a new wall hanging.
As it's a gift, it will have to remain
is a finish
with some simple straight line quilting.
I had emailed Carol during the late winter months
to inquire about her health.
During the course of our correspondence,
I asked about the availability of this pattern.
She very kindly dug around and found one lingering in her cache
and sent it to me right away.
Sadly, Carol passed away on May 7th.
Her family has left her blog intact
and I often revisit it for inspiration and rememberence.
Carol was incredibly talented,
loving color and whimsy.
I know she touched the lives of many quilters
around the world,
and that she is greatly missed.

Our first paddle of the season took us out into open ocean
and what a fun ride it was!
While the sea was relatively calm,
the water was rolling in a big way
as it made its approach toward the huge rocks
that so beautifully adorn our coastline.

No breakers, just rolling.
It made it a little difficult to get pictures,
but managed this almost nice one
before I almost crashed into the rocks,
making the Ranger just a little nervous!

Ruddy Turnstones
(Arenaria interpres)
8" - 10"
"A squat, robust, orange-legged shorebird with a harlequin pattern."
Arenaria is latin for 'sand-loving'.
These shorebirds breed during the summer months in the arctic tundra

I love your color play quilt and remember seeing it in various places on line - I had no idea Carol had died as I don't think I ever saw her blog - I just went to it and started to read bits and pieces and see they thought she might have had an autoimmune disease in the end - they are so hard to diagnose - been there and done that - and I was a lucky one in getting a diagnoses -
I am so sorry to hear about your friend, Carol. I wasn't familiar with her blog until reading about it here. It was nice to go and read through some of it. She was a talented craafter. The pattern you made is outstanding. I love the lines.
When you say paddle, do you mean with a kayak? That sounds like fun.
Enjoy your day Karen. :-)
Two lovely new quilts Karen! Both quite different but I love them both :-) Your paddling sounds like it was a fun challenge, you have such interesting birds around your area. Hae fun this weekend - for us it will be heads down and tails up in some mud, out on the farm!
Sorry to hear about your friend. I'm glad you were able to get her pattern and make it. Both of your quilts are so lovely and how fun that you can now quilt them. Love the bird picture and am happy you did not crash while taking it. Bet it was nice to be out on the water once again. Let us know how the quilt show went this weekend. Have a great time! Nola
I love your use of color. Your quilts are so pretty. Love the birds you find around your home. How do you manage to take those pictures? Anytime I go neat a feathered creature they fly, fly away.
So sorry about the loss of your friend. It is hard to lose a friend.
Hi Karen i am so sorry to hear about Carol, may she RIP .

I was very sad to see that Carol had passed away she had such talent in quilting and as an artist. I loved her postcards...Your color play is really nice..colorful and well done! So cool to see Turnstones in breeding plumage!!
What a great calorie free desert.. A lovely mini for your sewing place...
A great colour way quilt by Carol. So sad that she passed. I have a fabulous portrait quilt she made to remember by always.
Oh!!! Have a wonderful time with the ladies at the quilt show.....look forward to piccies..
Look at you go with the finishes! They are both just wonderful and your quilting, well, you are a pro. I will see you in a few hours! Don't forget to bring a quilt with you so we can see for ourselves. hugs
I would have to add lots of other words to that quilt like work, garden, etc.... I love your colourful quilts! So sorry to hear about your friend.
Great finishes. You did such a great job on the quilting.
Hope you get to do more paddling this weekend.
I love the color choices that you used in your Repeat quilt.
I was so saddened when I read Carol's daughter's post about her mother. She was such an amazingly talented and sweet person and her death is such a loss. I'm glad you will have such a lovely quilt as a remembrance.
Hello, pretty quilts and colors. I like the Ruddy Turnstones too. I am sorry for the loss of your friend, Carol! Prayers to you and the family.
Have a happy weekend!
To be able to finish all of these gorgeous quilts is amazing. I also followed Carol and was saddened by her passing. Her daughter and husband are very loving and caring people whom I have "met" though Carol's blog. Your tribute quilt to Carol is stunning and she would love it too. Keep enjoying your Summer as it will be gone all too soon. Embracing Creative Bliss...
Love the Color Play quilt! Glad you finally got to go kayaking. We haven't been out much this summer. :-( Have fun with the Nova Scotia Quartet!!
Wonderful finishes. I think your quilting on the words quilt is fabulous. It looks very professional to me. =) The next quilt is terrific, too. I hadn't heard that she died, and that is very sad. I'm so glad you finished the quilt. It looks lovely. Those birds don't look like you worried them any! What a fun day that must have been.
Your colour play quilt is beautiful! Great picture of the turnstones. I am 'home alone' for the weekend! Have decorated the kitchen and now have my 'studio' to finish off. But am enjoying 'me' time and 'me' food too. xx
Your quilts are stunning! I think your quilting is amazing and I look forward to seeing your mastery of FMQ happening sooner than later!
Both quilts are absolutely gorgeous. I love your colour choices. I can't wait to see what you're working on with the alphabet.
Stunning finishes Karen, love them both . Carol was a very talented lady and I so enjoyed her work , she will indeed be missed. Neat birds too , not familiar with them in don't think. Sorry I missed the show on Saturday 😯
I love the bright, cheerful colors that you're working with! Great quilts and finishes. I'm sorry to hear that Carol passed away, I lost touch with her blog for a time, but I loved to read her posts, she had such a great sense of humor and fun.
Have a great weekend,
Judy
I love your colour play quilt! Actually I love both of your quilts! I was following Carol and was very upset when she passed. Her symptoms sounded a lot like mine. I was also given steroids IV. I lost my ability to walk and I lost my driver's licence. After extensive rehab I learned to walk again. But things were never the same. I get around on my scooter. I guess I should be happy that I survived.
Yeah!! It looks great. I never got started even though I had intended to. Sorry to hear about your friend.
I love your quilts, repeat lines may be simple but there is a lot of sewing required in them and it's so effective. Very sad about Carol and it's wonderful her blog stays open for all to enjoy.
Enjoy your summer... starting to warm up a bit here but I know we always have a late freeze so I'm not cleaning the fire away!
Hugz
Your quilts are great, Karen. I read Carol's blog for many years; she would be thrilled to see your beautiful quilt.
What a rare treat to see those birds, I confess I had never heard of them. A moment of privilege for sure.
The last time you posted about the Color Play quilt I had contacted Carol and purchased her pattern also. I read of her illness and am sorry to hear of her passing. She was a very talented quilter.
Whoa - I had no idea she died!!! I used to go to her blog all the time. How sad!!! She was truly amazing in all she did.
I love your quilt, and the saying, lol....I can do that! Your Color Play quilt is quite gorgeous as well.
Fabulous photos, oh how I love the saying on the wallhanging and that colorplay quilt--NEED to make! Will check out the link.
